Topics exploring the intersection of [generative] artificial intelligence, information literacy, and critical thinking in the classroom.

What is AI literacy?

AI literacy is a set of critical thinking and practical skills used to understand, evaluate, and ethically and responsibly use [generative] AI. 

Components of AI literacy include:

  • Understanding AI. Having some technical knowledge about AI, from knowing basic terminology to understanding machine learning to identifying appropriate use.
  • Using and applying AI. Using AI tools best suited for your academic and professional needs, iteratively developing prompts, and evaluating AI output, all done within ethical frameworks.
  • Analyzing and evaluating AI. In both individual and broader, societal contexts, this includes identifying misinformation, recognizing bias, examining underlying assumptions, exploring ethical and privacy implications.
  • Creating AI. Beyond just "using and applying" AI, this component focuses on creating and building novel AI applications and software.

There are many AI literacy frameworks. CCC Library is using the OCCDLA (Oregon Community College Distance Learning Association) framework in our approach to building AI literacy in our community.
