CCC Library stands in support and solidarity with our AAPI friends, family, and neighbors.

On Tuesday, March 16th, 2021, eight people were murdered in Atlanta, GA, by a white supremacist. Six of the victims were of Asian descent; seven were women. Many were immigrants. All were loved.

Our community must confront white supremacy and misogyny head on.

Engage with local and national AAPI-led organizations (see below).
Educate yourself. Oregon has a history of anti-Asian bias and atrocities.
Follow the hashtags #stopasianhate and #stopaapihate
Give supportive words or time or money.

Educate yourself: Oregon's history

Massacre at Hells Canyon
Chinese immigrants were instrumental in building the West, but they faced unprecedented legalized discrimination and violence. In 1887, a gang of Wallowa County men killed as many a 34 Chinese gold miners along the Snake River. For over a century the murders were covered up, and no one was held accountable. Today, the massacre at Hells Canyon is finally acknowledged.

The internment of Japanese Americans in the United States during World War II was the forced relocation and incarceration in concentration camps in the western interior of the country of about 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, most of whom lived on the Pacific Coast.

Oregon Rises Above Hate
Oregon Rises Above Hate is the result of a coming together of AAPI community leaders who want to defeat anti-Asian hate through targeted government action, broad educational programs, and by harnessing the power of the entire AAPI community and all Oregonians statewide.
Stop AAPI Hate
In response to the alarming escalation in xenophobia and bigotry resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Asian Pacific Planning and Policy Council (A3PCON), Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA), and the Asian American Studies Department of San Francisco State University launched the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center on March 19, 2020. The center tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

Portland United Against Hate

Portland United Against Hate is a coalition of more than 80 local groups that work together to support community members targeted by hate. They manage the website ReportHatePDX, and provide trauma informed care and social services to people impacted by hate. They also offer workshops throughout the year to educate our communities on how to reduce harm. Visit their website to get involved or donate.
Hollaback!
Hollaback! has several resource guides for workplace, street, and online harassment, and how we can be effective bystanders when we witness instances of hate, harassment, or discrimination. They also provide free training to the public that covers the 5D’s of bystander intervention, how to stop anti-Asian harassment and xenophobia, and how to respond to harassment for people personally experiencing anti-Asian harassment.
