Study resources, mapmaking tools, and unit materials for FRP-244 Wilderness II: Basic Land Navigation

Importing data from GPS to Google Earth

First you are going to download your GPS data into Google Earth Pro to convert it to .KML file. Then you can use that .KML file to apply your data to a real topographic map in CalTopo and experiment with layers and features.

1. Download Google Earth Pro

2. Plug your GPS unit into the computer using the connector cable

3. Select Tools > GPS > Import

4. Create a folder and name according to date (20171128)

5. Select all way points and tracks

6. ETC

7. Open CalTopo.

8. Import your .KML file to CalTopo.

Fun fact: find locally made maps through Google by searching for the map you want followed by filetype:kml or filetype:kmz. Open the file in Google Earth Pro or CalTopo!
