ENG222

Library guide to support ENG 222 - Children and Young Adult Literature

Introduction

Your instructor asked the library to purchase a selection of Middle Grade classics for ENG222. Those are listed on this page by author last name.

CCC Library also purchases Middle Grade books by contemporary authors, or if you can't get them through CCC you can use Summit to request copies from other libraries for free. Please talk to a librarian if you need help: reference@clackamas.edu.

Middle Grade @ CCC Library

Some typical characteristics of Middle Grade books:

  • A main character in the 8-12 age or 3rd-6th grade range.
  • Topics and themes that are relevant to the 8-12 age group such as friends, family, and school.
  • No profanity, graphic violence, or explicit activities.
  • Rarely dystopian.

You will notice many of the books have a round sticker on the spine with a 3-4 digit number. This is a Lexile number. At CCC Library, we generally use Lexile rather than age/grade because reading age, ability, and interest can vary significantly between individuals. Lexile numbers help determine the difficulty of a book. The range is usually 500-1100 with lower numbers being easier to read (less complex language and shorter sentences) than higher numbers. However, it's important to note: Lexile doesn't map directly to Middle Grade / Young Adult categories. There can be easy-to-read books that are about themes inappropriate for 3rd graders.
